Community Rallies to Support Displaced Residents After EF-1 Tornado Strikes |
Van Buren, Arkansas—A confirmed EF-1 tornado struck Van Buren on Friday morning, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing numerous residents.
The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado touched down around 7:46 AM CDT, moving rapidly through the area. Residents were caught off guard as the storm intensified swiftly, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to the Van Buren Housing Authority, at least 30 out of 200 residential units sustained damage severe enough to render them uninhabitable. Strategic Realty and Fort Smith Housing are collaborating to provide emergency housing for those affected. Additionally, Section 8 is issuing emergency vouchers to assist displaced families.
Local resident Kristie Bartley recounted the harrowing experience: "Hell broke loose! Power went out, and then it sounded like something just ran into my house, and then it was over." While her home remained intact, many of her neighbors were not as fortunate.
Emergency response teams, including the American Red Cross, have established a shelter at First Baptist Church, 1121 Main Street, to accommodate those in need. Volunteers and community members are working tirelessly to clear debris and restore normalcy.
Despite the extensive property damage, reports indicate that injuries were minimal. Two individuals were hospitalized with minor injuries, and no fatalities have been reported.
As the community begins the recovery process, local authorities urge residents to stay informed about weather updates and heed future warnings promptly. The resilience and unity displayed by Van Buren's residents underscore the town's strength in the face of adversity.
For those wishing to assist, donations and volunteer opportunities are being coordinated through local organizations and the Red Cross. |
